HISTORY

The area was inhabited by the Miami people for several years before Europeans arrived. Kokomo was officially incorporated in 1855, and it was later named the county seat of Howard County. Railroads went through the area around the same time, and a natural gas boom made the city especially popular at the end of the nineteenth century. Now, the city is known for the Kokomo Gas Tower, which has been a symbol of the city since the 1950s, as well as the Howard County Courthouse, an art deco design listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
